My work explores the tension between nature’s invisible physical force and a painterly, emotive interpretation. For many years I have observed a pond located near my home in the Hudson Valley. This small body of water appears in paintings and prints informed by catastrophic events such as 9/11, Hurricane Irene, Covid, and the war in Israel/Palestine. The pictorial space is warped or disturbed: an investigation of a dreamlike threatened landscape . The images echo a disquiet about the instability of our environment - as if there is a hole in the world that needs to be healed.

“Deborah Freedman’s evocative landscapes carry forward the legacy of the Hudson River School while confronting the realities of environmental change. In her recent works, the human figure emerges with the landscape, deepening her meditation on connection, loss and resilience.”. Patricia Miranda. Artist, Curator and Educator.
